Preview : American Fiction

Preview : American Fiction

Starting 2024 off with what’s sure to be one of the finest films of the year. Join us as we bring you a preview of the brilliant American Fiction starring Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and Erika Alexander.

Cord Jefferson's hilarious directorial debut is both a wicked satire about the commodification of marginalised voices and a portrait of an artist forced to re-examine his integrity.

Monk (Jeffrey Wright) is a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

Adapted from Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut is a wildly entertaining send-up of our hunger for so-called authenticity. Featuring stellar supporting turns from Issa Rae and Erika Alexander, and a string of cheeky cameos, American Fiction is a timely reflection on the fictions we tell ourselves about race, progress, and community.

Presented by We Are Parable and Cables and Cameras.

CABLES & CAMERAS PRESENTS : ON THE OTHER FOOT

Bristol Premiere. In partnership with DET Entertainment and Life 2020

+ Talk and Q&A with the director
Fri 3 December // 19:30

Tickets: £5 (full) / £4 (concession)

Join Cables & Cameras with DET Entertainment and Life 2020 who are presenting the brand new UK feature film On The Other Foot.

A highly recommended comedy about humanity and real life in the UK, although contemporary events globally echo and chime profoundly in this smart but lighthearted story. In the light of the recent happenings around the world, the film, which is set in London, cleverly discusses race in it's comedic narrative. On The Other Foot tells the story of London cab diver Billy Pitcher, an out-and-out racist who's suddenly forced to re-examine his views in dramatic fashion.

Recent times have highlighted racial disparities and brought to light the differences that are deeply entrenched within many societies. The film focuses on some of the underlying tones experienced globally on a daily basis by people of colour but it's done in a way so as not to offend the viewer, the film's emphasis is to be educational and captivating. The story was written, directed and produced by award winning Fredi Nwaka , Executive producers, Cham Joof and Grayson McRae, and the third film from Fredi Nwaka's Production house Are We Dead Yet Ltd.

It has been a difficult few years for the community and we would like to put a smile back on everyone’s face by watching this lighthearted comedy.

This event will be the last screening of the 2021 for C+C, so we like your support and voices to be at this screening.

We would like to say thank you for the audience and funders for supporting Cables & Cameras in 2021. And 2022 will be a productive year and we would encourage you to keep supporting more POC filmmakers and creatives.

Look out for a Q+A with Fredi Nwaka the award winning director, producer and writer after the film. Hosted by Michael Jenkins from Blak Wave Productions.

BBC Digital Cities Bristol - How do we support the next generation of BAME filmmakers?

Cables Cameras and MANDEM present an exclusive Q&A discussion with Sheridan De Myers, director of 'The Weekend' movie, about the future of black and minority ethnic filmmakers in the UK.

Our national broadcasters have an obligation under their operating licenses to reflect the society we live in, both on and off screen. However, a report by Directors UK, launched in September 2018, revealed that despite the fact that 14% of the UK population consists of people from ethnic minority backgrounds, just 2.22% of our TV programmes are made by BAME directors.

- What barriers might BAME directors face in the industry?
- Can we push a more diverse range of people to get into film?
- Why is diversity and representation important?

Come along to this event to hear Sheridan share some wise words from his experience in the industry.

The conversation

An all-day event that will include mentoring, workshops, keynote speakers and will conclude with the screening of short films.

11.00am - 17.45pm session
19.30pm - 10pm session

This gathering will provide the much-needed opportunity for attendees to network with like-minded filmmakers and creatives. The event targets students through to career professionals, anyone who is committed to taking part in the conversation on B.A.M.E participation and representation in the film industry. The desire is for the event to be the first of many in Bristol’s cultural calendar. Bristol does not have many or enough B.A.M.E film nights / events; we are shaping this to be a regular event for Bristol.

To increase diversity, we need to look at different models for engaging, targeting and coaching BAMEs in how to get into the film and TV industry; at varying levels and across various roles.

The Conversation is an event that bridges the gap. It opens up access to seasoned professionals who will be able to share experience, advice and guidance on operating in the film industry. The event will fill the void that exists currently by providing a window into what can be perceived as an exclusive industry.
