CABLES & CAMERAS STARTED IN THE HEART OF BRISTOL’S STOKE CROFT ART QUARTER, IN THE LEGENDARY INDEPENDENTLY LED CUBE CINEMA.

Cables & Cameras Over the last 3 years the project has grown from strength to strength, building on the bi-monthly film nights to staging a gorilla outdoor film screening at the St Paul’s 50th carnival anniversary. Hosting on fringe events at a major film festivals and become a key voice and leader in Bristol’s independent film community.

The events create a hub for POC filmmakers and creatives in Bristol to showcase their short films / sizzler reels, enabling a platform where filmmakers can discuss, share and debate ideas. Creating this space also opens up opportunities to collaborate and network with other like-minded POC creatives.

POC representation across the film industry is well below where it needs to be. In Bristol we have a very diverse community and mix of cultures but sometimes we don’t see or hear the stories that affect us all in day-to-day life.  Diversity is on everyone’s lips at the moment, the fact that there is a lack of representation in the TV and film business is clearly visible.

To increase diversity, we need to look at different models for engaging, targeting and coaching POCs in how to get into the film and TV industry; at varying levels and across various roles. The founder, Gary Thompson, recognised and identified the need to fill a gap in linking the community to film and vice versa. Alongside creating a movement and enabling access into POC films, Cables & Cameras also runs film projects, with filming and production credits achieved over a number of years by the founder.
